BROOKS
BOATS DESIGNS
Somes
Sound 12-1/2
Getting
started workshop: The details
Saturday
and Sunday,
November 12 & 13
Here
at our shop in West Brooklin, Maine

The
workshop
The
cost for the workshop is $225, which includes coffee break
and lunch each day. The workshop will run Saturday from
8:00 a.m. to around 6:00 p.m., and Sunday from 8:00 a.m.
until after lunch; then we’ll discuss and load plywood,
with the aim of having everyone who needs to drive on the
road before dark (which comes early....)
We
plan on covering the following: Managing a big
glued-lapstrake project; setting up the jig, molds, and the
backbone for the Somes Sound; tackling the tougher parts of
building the boat; and answering your questions about the
plans and building the boat. If there are additional things
you would like us to go over, please let us know. Also, in
May we organized an “official” dinner out at a local
restaurant on Saturday night, it was great fun and is
something we’d like to do again.
Materials
Plywood:
In
this workshop, we can help with ordering the plywood for
your boat. Sapele is, unfortunately, very difficult and
unpredictable to get these days, so we are offering meranti
plywood that is marine grade
and very well made. The price for nine sheets of 3/8" and
two sheets of 1/2": about $800.00.
How
to sign up
Please
send us an email
letting
us know that you’d like to come. We’ll put you on our
participant email list and send along official info on
the workshop and plywood ordering as well as details on
places to stay, eat, and visit in the area. There's
plenty to do in Brooklin and the Blue Hill peninsula,
and we are also about an hour from Acadia National Park.
November is truly fall in Maine, “fallen” actually since
the leaves will be on the ground; the weather can be
anything from bright and gloriously crisp to gray and
downright weathery. A great time of year to talk boats
in a warm and (we hope) sunny boat shop.
We're
looking forward to it!
Best,
John and Ruth
