Fall
materials order
for the Somes Sound 12 1/2
after
John’s WoodenBoat School class
IMPORTANT
NOTE:
The
materials order is offered by us (John and Ruth, Brooks
Boats Designs)
not the WoodenBoat School.
We’ll be loading materials at our shop in West Brooklin,
about six miles from the WoodenBoat School campus,
on Saturday, September 1, 2012.
If
there is sufficient interest, we’ll put together a group
materials order
for plywood, lead keels, solid wood, and standing rigging.
If you won’t be able to attend the class but would like
to pick up materials on September 1, this may also be
possible.
If you think you would be interested in ordering materials,
please send us an email
and
we’ll put you on the list.
Somes Sound 12
1/2 in our shop, December 2011.
We’ll
have more information and a better estimate for prices
later on. The following are 2011 prices. As with most
things, please assume they will have gone up and we’ll all
be pleasantly surprised if they have not.
•
Lead
keel: The
keel weighs about 600 lbs. Total, including loading: around
$2,000.00.
•
Plywood:
Sapele
is, unfortunately, very difficult and unpredictable to get
these days, so we are offering meranti plywood that is
marine grade and very well made. The price for nine sheets
of 3/8" and two sheets of 1/2": about $800.00.
•
Solid
wood: If
four or more participants would like to order solid wood,
we have will order Douglas fir and sipo (an African
mahogany) for the following parts:
•
•
Inner
and outer stem •
Keelson
and keel • Transom, cheeks and transom knee • Deadwood and
stern post • Sheer clamps, floors and floor fillers • Trunk
posts, logs and cleats •
Keel filler and web frame cleats
•
This
will complete the hull, ready to pull off the jig, and adds
up to 75 board feet of Douglas fir and 62 board feet of
sipo. It is a goodly portion of the total wood in the boat.
All lumber will be planed to clean up the faces. Total cost
in spring
2011
was $1,250.00. We are also looking at offering a smaller
solid wood bundle that gives you everything you need to
build only the hull; if you would prefer this option,
please let us know.
•
Standing
rigging, for either marconi or gaff rig:
A set of standing rigging for either rig option: between
$300 and $350.
