wbsmallboatadfinal

Saturday and Sunday, May 7 & 8
Here at our shop in West Brooklin, Maine

There is room for one more person in the May workshop.
(It’s too late to order keels, plywood, and rigging, alas; and the solid wood order is coming up soon.)

For registration and materials ordering information,
please go to this page.

The workshop

The cost for the workshop is $225, which includes coffee break and lunch each day. The workshop will run all day Saturday and Sunday. For part of one afternoon (whichever has the better weather), we’ll discuss and load materials.

We plan on covering the following: Managing a big glued-lapstrake project; setting up the jig, molds, and the backbone for the Somes Sound; tackling the tougher parts of building the boat; and answering your questions about the plans and building the boat. If there are additional things you would like us to go over, please let us know.

Materials

We can help with materials for your boat, saving you the considerable shipping costs and passing along savings received by ordering for the group.
Lead keel: Plan on the keel weighing about 600 lbs. Total cost, including loading: $1,950.00.
Plywood: Sapele is, unfortunately, very difficult and unpredictable to get these days, so we are offering meranti plywood that is marine grade and very well made. The price for nine sheets of 3/8" and two sheets of 1/2" is $775.00.
Solid wood: If four or more participants would like to order solid wood, we have priced out Douglas fir and sipo (an African mahogany) for the following parts: • Inner and outer stem • Keelson and keel • Transom, cheeks and transom knee • Deadwood and stern post • Sheer clamps, floors and floor fillers • Trunk posts, logs and cleats • Keel filler and web frame cleats. This will complete the hull, ready to pull off the jig, and adds up to 75 board feet of Douglas fir and 62 board feet of sipo. It is a good portion of the wood in the boat. All lumber will be planed to clean up the faces. Total cost: $1,250.00 to $1,500.00 (estimated.)
Standing rigging, for either marconi or gaff rig: If three or more participants would like the standing rigging, our rigging supplier can offer a discount. The regular price for a set of rigging is $325.00, we can offer the set at $310.00.

How to sign up

Please send us an email letting us know that you’d like to come to the May workshop (or which dates you would prefer for a fall workshop.) At the same time, please let us know which, if any, materials you will also be wanting. We’ll put you on our participant email list and send along official materials for the workshop as well as information on places to stay and about visiting the area. There's plenty to do in Brooklin and the Blue Hill peninsula, and we are also about an hour from Acadia National Park. May is spring in Maine. It's a little bit before most visitors arrive, so it's a fine time to enjoy things before the crowds.

We're looking forward to it!

Best,

John and Ruth
